The only real remedy for a real earache.

Timothy S. Furnier in Lancaster, Pa. - best
I say "real earache" because a lot of people confuse what is called "swimmer's ear" with an earache. You have the Middle Ear (which is the part between the ear drum and the ear itself) and the Inner Ear (which is the part between the ear drum and the throat). Swimmer's ear is when fluid becomes trapped in the Middle Ear. It stagnates and causes an infection. An earache is when fluid gets trapped BEHIND the Ear Drum. It stagnates and causes infection. Often times it is thrust from the throat into the Eustachian Tube (the connection between ear and throat) because a person blows his or her nose too intensely. If a person already has a cold, then the fluid is already infected with bacteria. The infected fluid pushes against the ear drum, which is why you have throbbing pain when you have an earache.

I can't address the pain aspect of an Earache, I usually just rode that part of it out, but I can tell you how to get rid of the fluid which causes an earache or avoid one that is coming. Once an infection occurs, the ear will become tender or painful because of it. The only way to get rid of the infection is with antibiotics, or to get rid of the fluid and ride out the pain until your body naturally heals itself.

The most effective way to safely get rid of an earache is simply to take a decongestant to open and/or dialate all of the passages in the head. Then you sleep on the OPPOSITE ear affected. The Eustachian Tube will open up, and sleeping on the opposite ear will allow the fluid to natually drain into the throat. (Be careful because sometimes the fluid could drain from one ear to the other this way, but it works 95% of the time.) If done properly, you will notice that most of the pain will disappear overnight.

DO NOT EVER sleep on the side with the earache. The fluid will have nowhere to go except THROUGH the ear drum. This will cause a rupture in the drum which is very painful. Also, if this happens too many times, a person may develop a diminution of hearing because scar tissue will cover the hole created. This will cause the skin covering the drum to become thick, and therefore it won't be able to vibrate as effectively, which is how we hear.

I don't know about some of these "remedies," but I would caution everyone NOT TO introduce smoke into the ear. Smoke is comprised of tiny particulates which could easily get trapped in the middle ear and cause an infection. My grandfather did this to me when I was a kid with one of my many earaches, and it only made it worse. I think the thought behind this "remedy" is that the smoke will deaden the pain. It doesn't work.

If you do what I say here, you will never experience another earache. I used to get one every couple of months when I was a child, but I haven't gotten one since I figured out this simple and effective cure when I was about twelve.

Salt Sock

Stacey in Jersey Shore - best
We always got earaches in my family, I have had numerous surgeries on my ears due to ear infections and what worked for me is:

1) Put salt in a sock and warm it in the microwave for about 3-5 min., after heating put Vick’s vapor rub on the sock and place on the ear with pain (must have heat on ear, between the heat and the Vick's vapor rub it draws the pain out).

2) A couple of Motrin IB 400-600mg. (If you don’t have Motrin take any over the counter pain killer Advil, Tylenol, ect.)

3) Most pharmacies carry all natural ear drops for relief of pain, just follow the directions on the box but instead of using a cotton ball use the salt sock described above. (The drops will intensify the pain for a few minutes but be patient it will work)

4) Follow up with a Dr. if you have an infection to get an antibiotic!!!!

Feel better,
Good luck and God bless

Smokers earache remedy

Blow a few puffs of smoke into the ear and hold a finger in the ear to prevent the smoke from escaping, the heavier the smoke the better the cure.

WORKS FOR MY FAMILY

Shawn in Cincinnati, Ohio - best
I grew up with several ear problems and aches. I had two operations in my right ear as well as tubes in both ears 6 different times. I've tried several things and three have worked for me.

First comes from an old Indian man who may have been my grandfather but that's for a different website....he would blow smoke in my ear. Campfire smoke, cigar smoke, or incents smoke.

Second is warm oil in ear such as swan oil from walgreens, or olive oil and then place some cotton in ear.

Third is some sort of heat i.e. heat pad, heated cloth or something such as these.

I usually started with the first on and if at didn't work at that specific time I'd move to the next and so on. The use these individually or as a whole, always worked for me and I still use them to this day for myself and children. Hope this works for everyone the way it has worked for me and my family.
GOD BLESS,
SHAWN

Vicks and piece of cotton

miguel in willacoochee ,G.A. - best
Still growing and still have earache. Usually during cold weather. When showering and going outside the cold weather to go to work. When arrived form work then take a shower again and go to bed, all of the sudden pop and a real painful ache. I take a piece of cotton and dab a little vicks vapor rub on the cotton (not inside the ear), just place the cotton with vicks just enough inside the outer ear. Let the vicks vapor do the work, you'll feel the pain go away in few minutes. If the next day might have pus, just wash inside the ear with warm water.

Relief For Ear Pain

Suzie Caretaker in Virginia - good
Dr. Oz from TV says to put a few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide into the ear canel. If it bubbles then you have an ear infection. Wash the ear out with a bit of warm water. If you do show signs of an infection see a doctor. For ear pain place a rather warm hot water bottle on the pillow and lay down on the bottle so the ear can drain if need be. Once the ear starts to get relief hold your nose and blow to make it pop if it will. Continue the hot water bottle and if prescribed antibiotics.
Also warmed campher drop will help relieve the pain. It seems like warmth is the best for ear pain in all cases.

It helps ear pain also if you make it a practice to wash out your sinuses with warm saline water. Get shringe at drug stores everywhere.

Earache Relief

mz. woods in sanford,nc - best
(1)First I took some rice(some people use salt) (2) put it in a bowl and put it in the microwave until fully heated.
(3)got 2 small socks(u can use any sock as long as its clean).
(4)poured the warm rice in the socks
(5) Tied a double knot
(6) took my hat(fitted huddy or toe boggin) and made it snug on my head
(7) then i stuffed the socks on both sides of my ears..making sure there were not too hot..making sure they wouldnt drop out(thats the reason for a snug fitted hat or bandanna)
THIS ALLOWED ME FREEDOM TO WALK AROUND MY HOUSE AND GET THINGS DONE WITH BOTH HANDS AND NOT HAVE TO HOLD THEM TO MY EARS. OR YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN CREATIVE IDEA FOR HOLDING THEM IN PLACE I EVEN SLEPT LIKE THIS ON MY BACK WITH MY HEAD PROPPED IN A COMFORTABLE POSITION SO THE FLUID COULD DRAIN PROPERLY..THE HEAT ABSORBS THE FLUID AND HELP CIRCULATION ON EARS. IT SOOTHES THE PAIN. ALSO TRY SITTING AND RELAXIN WHILE SIPPING A HOT LIQUID WHILE THE SOCKS ARE ON YOUR EARS..ITS CALMS YOUR BODY..WHEN RELAXED YOUR BODY CAN HEAL PROPERLY AND QUICKER

Works EVERY TIME for 20 years, no pain!!

B Adams in Atlanta, GA - best
At the first sign of ear ache, use an eye dropper to add about 20 drops of ordinary over the counter hydrogen peroxide to your ear, let if fizz for 10-20 minutes. I use a bulb to squirt it out, or if in pain, just let it drain by turning the head sideways- then at your next shower, 3 hrs or later, the pain should be gone, just rinse with the shower head.

Heat + Theriflu

Jackie in Los Angeles, CA - three stars
Weird as it sounds, I took one of those heating pads people stick on their backs or wherever and held it to my ear, that took care of most of the ear pain. But my throat up near my ear...kind of where they meet, was also hurting so i drank like 2 packets of theraflu and BAM now my throat feels fine, there's no pain but it kinda feels like my ear is still clogged. I figure a few more hours and it should be cleared up. The cloggy feeling kinda sucks but the pain is completely gone, I was minutes away from cutting my ear off before I decided to try the heat pad thingy. I hope this works for you!

Deep Heat Cream and a hot face cloth

Amber in Queensland, Australia - two stars
OK I have seriously tried every remedie that was listed here and none of them worked. So my mum suggested using deep heat cream and a hot face cloth on the sore ear. Leave it on there until the pain starts to go away.

I am writing this while I have a sore ear and I am using my suggestion..it seems to be working for me so hopefully it works for u too..if it doesn't just go back to using ear drops or peeing in a cup lol

GOOD LUCK :)
