Heat works no matter what people say

Louise in Epsom, England, UK - best
OK right when I was 8 yrs old I had this earache hurting so bad the only remedy I thought was death. But my mum heated my hot-water bottle and put it against my ear and after five minutes the pain was gone and after 2 days I went to the doctors to see if I did have an infection, and I didn't so I say HAH! to all the people who say it just causes infection.

Release pressure

jon in norfolk,va - one star
It depends on the earache and how you got it but usually I just try to relieve the pressure. When I was little my parents would blow smoke in my ears, or pour some kind of cooking oil. Didn't really matter what kind. I also chew on something pretty firm, a hardened piece of gum, rubber or plastic. Putting a warm cloth over your ear may help too. Good luck.

Olive Oil

Nancy in Temecula, California USA - best
Lightly warm up a few drops of virgin olive oil. Drop into hurting ear with a droppper or you can use Q-tips to put olive oil into the ear. Be careful to not puncture ear drum.
Never put hydrogen proxide in your ears, it will dry out the ear canal per a nurse friend of mine.

Peppermint Oil

Marlène in Florida, USA - best
I had swimmer's ear. First, I tried the good ol' heated onion trick (Put chopped up onion in a thin lady's sock and heat in microwave. Wrap in dish towel and place on ear.), but that didn't work out to well. Then, I went online and saw that a hair dryer worked for some people (Hold hair dryer on low/medium 6-12 inches from ear for desired amount of time.), but, also, not for me.
Then, I saw that lots of oils were used in earache remedies. I remembered how often I use peppermint oil for headaches, so I thought "why not try it on my ear?". So I dabbed a q-tip in 3 drops of peppermint oil and applied it outside and somewhat inside the ear canal. Turns out, IT WORKED! My ear kind of tingles now, but not in a bad way. Maybe peppermint oil is some kind of natural asprin...?
