Double wammy

Leah in Chicago, IL - good
At the first twinge of pain down there I immediately grab for my water and alkaseltzers (the kind for heartburn that DOESN'T have aspirin in it) and start alkalizing myself with these and through diet (look up an alkaline diet). I then start d-mannose about every 2 -3 hrs (I use powder 1tsp in a glass of water). That does the trick in about a day or two. If it gets worse after that I go see my acupuncturist and he does a great treatment on me and gives me some herbs to take.

Urinary Tract Infection/Bladder Infection

D. Webster in San Diego, CA - best
Cranberry Juice and Baking Soda did the trick -- it took less than 24 hours.

I bought the unsweetened cranberry juice (very sour) and a box of baking soda (total cost was less than $4.00)

I mixed equal parts cranberry juice and water (about 8 oz. total)and drank it every two hours with a glass of water between each dose. It tastes pretty gross since it is unsweetened, but I just hold my nose and gulp it down.

I also mixed 1/2 tsp. baking soda with 8 oz. water
and drank it once in the morning and once before bed.

I started at about 11 in the morning and was better the next day. You can premix your cranberry solution and bring it in a water bottle if you have to go to work.

Also, stay away from caffeine and sugary foods until you feel better.

I saved myself a trip to the doctor (I ended up cancelling my appointment)and also saved money.

***This is important***
This kind of infection is very uncomfortable and painful, especially when you are urinating. So we tend to want to avoid liquids because we think that we will have to go more often, which would lead to more pain. THIS NOT THE CASE. I know this from experience because when my bladder wasn't full and I had to pee, it hurt more than when my bladder was full.

Drink a lot of liquid and it will actually feel better to use the bathroom.

Good luck!

Marshmallow root tea

Lynn in Missouri - best
Make a tea with the herb marshallow root. I put a good sized pan on the stove, throw a handful of marshmallow root in, bring to a boil and let simmer for 10 minutes or more. Then I drink as many cups as needed to get relief. I used to have horrible bladder infections and I would always get relief quickly with this. Drinking lots of hot water will help in a pinch but the marshmallow root is much more effective.

Cranberry

saharamz in Clarksville, TN, USA - best
If I have a UTI, Cranstat Extra supplements by Vitanica work for me every time (use as directed on bottle).

When pregnant I drank straight cranberry juice (the bitter kind with no sugar... I buy Knudsen brand) for a couple of days. (Aim for about a cup a day if you can swallow it). It brought relief right away and cleared up the infection.

Now I take preventative measures by drinking 1 oz. of cranberry juice every morning - I stay UTI free.

Olive leaf extract

Anne in NY, NY - best
Olive leaf extract or Olea europa

I have suffered from UTIs since I was 22 and could not shake them. I would go on antibiotics ALL the time and rapidly, my infection would get so bad it would cause me kidney infections and I'd basically be peeing what looked like ketchup and rice (it was AWFUL!). I hate antibiotics and after going to the emergency room, I decided I would find out what really worked. Olive Leaf Extract can be found online and at health food stores. IT ROCKS! It takes a little time to work, but it's faster than antibiotics and gets to the root of the problem. Be sure to eat yogurt (Stonyfield is the best for this) to replenish your good bacteria, too. Cranberry helps, but not with severe infections and you have to get the pure stuff. Also, D-Mannose works. Also, drink your water!!!

Cucumber water

Adina in Rancho Cucamonga,CA - best
Peel and slice a cucumber and put into a thermos type container. Add water and flood your body by drinking this throughout the day. This helps to make your body more alkaline. My friend told me about it and it really does work.

Grand Slam

Tarob in Toronto, Canada - best
I have suffered from bladder infections over the last couple of years and once I learned how harmful the antibiotic you receive from the doctor is, I decided to do some research.

In order to combat a recurring bladder infection:
1. Drink pure, unsweetened organic cranberry juice, daily
2. Take a live, active acidophilus pill, daily
3. Take a natural antibiotic (like garlic or bee propolis), daily
4. Take a vitamin C supplement 1000mg, daily
5. Drink tons of water and keep the vagine clean
